The hurricane came and went and still no baby. But we were worried. Worried the little one would decide to stage an arrival in the middle of the craziness. How would we get to our hospital if the bridges and tunnels were closed as the city was warning might happen? Mama was stressing about it a bit when lo and behold, a family of angels in Manhattan called and said, hey, come stay with us so you'll be close to your hospital! They didn't mention the kickass party the kids were going to have as well.
The baby didn't come, but we were far more relaxed over those two nights knowing that we were close and taken care of by our wonderful friends. Thank you Rolf, Ushma, Clyde, Calvin, and Veronica for sharing your apartment (and your beds!) and your toys and your food and your love with us! You are the best!
I don't think Ollie had any clue why we were there (Rolf was explaining to the boys Monday night that the lights wouldn't turn on because the power didn't work, and one of them asked, "what's power?" You sure either have to know how to explain a lot of random sh*t to be a parent, or be able to make good stuff up!), but it really didn't matter since all he cared about was having a blast with his three big friends.
But before the power went out, there was lots of story reading.
Lots of eating. And let me tell you, I thought getting one kid to eat all his dinner was difficult, but try coaxing three to do it at the same time...
A fair amount of bed jumping (costume optional).
Nekkid coloring parties.
Even nekkid dinner parties. (Notice Clyde hiding at the end of the table for this shot... perhaps he's getting too old for nekkid pictures to be cute anymore!?)
And group bath parties.
And, still, after the power went out, there were plenty of things to do. I didn't get pictures of the origami party or the after-dark candle-lit card playing and booze drinking—but—when all your ice cream is going to melt, what do you do? Have a giant ice cream eating picnic in the living room of course!
And if you don't have tv or internet or very good phone service, reading books is a pretty good way to pass the time too.
But the best part was probably the long long long runway for inside scootering, running, and bike riding, even in the dark.
We were lucky—lucky to have such great friends to take us in, and lucky to come back to our own apartment which was dry and safe, while many people just miles from us had far tougher days during the hurricane and far tougher days to come with all of the damage that was done. Thank you amazing friends for taking us in. We love you!
(And now back to our regularly scheduled program of waiting for this stubborn baby to come!)
